We urgently need your help – Please support Mari #HelpMari

It has been quiet some time since my last post here. Shifting house , being busy working on other things and vacation plus important time with my family had been my priority for the last months.

I am writing today as I came to know that Mari, a loyal friend, a contributor on the Blog and a generally very lovely person is suffering from a stage 5 Kidney disease.  The Kidneys are working only at a very few percent as of now. She needs urgent dialysis treatments and a kidney transplant . She is currently in Dubai,  she is due to her sickness not on a job any longer and is also without healthcare and a valid visa right now. She has failed to meet financial obligations which make it impossible for her just to leave the country and get (a still very expensive) treatment in the Philippines.  She has as well two kids who still need her mother with them.

Her sister has setup a gofundme.com campaign in order to raise money for improving her health status as there is no other way out. If you can support the Campaign or work for or know an organisation that could help her here in the UAE please let me know. Any help is much appreciated.  Our prayers are with Mari and her family.

Reviewed: Betawi Review Indonesian, JLT

Betawi is usually the meaning  of people in Batavia, the colonial name for Jakarta from around the 17th century. The Betawi cuisine s rich, diverse and eclectic mainly because it is created by people composed of numbers of regional immigrants that are coming from various places in the archipelago as well as Chinese, Indians, Arab and European traders , visitors and immigrants that were attracted to the port/ city of Batavia (today called as Modern Jakarta) since centuries ago.

Last Friday, we got the chance to visit Betawi in JLT. One of the probably most famous and delicious traditional native food of Indonesian cuisine in Dubai. They got another branch in Dubai too which is located in Karama since almost 10 already. And this one in Jlt is operating in its second year now. Betawi is located in JLT´s Cluster D at the Lake Side Level of the Lake Terrace Building. You got a nice view and a really cozy atmosphere.

We sat there like 1.30 in the afternoon and were amazed of this place. Like customers are keeping coming and going from a huge variety of nationalities and aside from that the fast going orders of their take out delivery is clearly seen. As we tasted the food, it is very excellent and it can fits most probably anyones taste no matter if you are Asian, Arab, Indian, European or Chinese.  Another cool thing is that although some of their menu items are quite spicy, you can inform them to lessen the spices. That day we visted Betawi the weather in Dubai was very windy and cold, so we decided to start off with a tradional ginger tea to warm ourselves up a bit.

We of course tried out their best seller, the native traditional soup, Soto Betavi,  coconut based with diced beef and cabbage. The beef is very soft and it comes with plain rice topped with garlic. I liked the soft fried spicy oxtail soup served with vegetables and plain rice a lot too.

The meat is very yummy and soft they called it Sop Buntut Balado. Also the traditional bbq chicken with peanut sauce also can be lamb as option per your choice is very yummy as they crushed the peanut butter sauce manually. That gives it a yum yum marination. Beef with special sauce is also one of their best menu items. They boil their meat in a low fire for few hours to make it very tender and soft.

Nasi Goreng is a very well known authentic Indonesian Fried rice mixed with chicken, vegetable with sunny side up egg and crackers. Their traditional iced tea is very cool and authentic. As we finished the main course, despite b eing already very full, their desserts served looked very attractive and we had to go for them. They are super tasty as for example their Indonesian pancake with sweet coconut which was served along with sticky rice and mixed with banana or the more tradional Es Campur mixed iced fruit with coconut jelly, grass jelly, mix fruits and milk  with a traditional syrup.

I can truly say this is the best Indonesian cuisine we ever tasted. And that all on very reasonable prices. Surely a garant for coming back.

Amazon to spend $1 billion to conquer the Middle East !

Amazon is said to spend $1 billion on buying local e-commerce giant Souq.com. Given that the website was almost an exact copy of Amazon in many ways this just makes sense.

Amazon is one of the world’s largest retail destinations, but it doesn’t have much traction in the Middle East. That’s why rumors that it’s looking to buy Souq.com, the Amazon of the Middle East, make so much sense. Bloomberg is reporting that Jeff Bezos and crew might spend up to $1 billion on the site to gain a foothold across Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Neither party is talking about the deal, but if it’s getting reported in an august financial publication like Bloomberg then it must be serious.

Souq has looked to solve challenges that aren’t so prominent in the US and other countries where Amazon is dominant. Inc. profiled the company a few months ago, revealing that the retailer had to develop a new payment platform for a region where credit cards aren’t ubiquitous. So, users are able to shop for products by topping up a prepaid card available at various brick-and-mortar retail outlets. Another issue is logistics, since some regions don’t have as sophisticated delivery services as others — but perhaps that’s something that Amazon can help with.

I would be pretty happy about having the real deal available instead of Souq.com.

Tried out: A Boat Trip with Xclusive Tours Dubai

A couple of days ago we had tried out Xclusive Tours Dubai.  Xclusive Tours is located at the Dubai Marina Walk, close to the City Premiere Marina Hotel / La Verda Hotel or if you come from the main road it is basically behind the Radisson Blu Hotel.

The boats they are using are RIB boats ( Rigid Inflatable Boats) which, they have quiet powerful engines and you really get a very speedy ride with them.  We tried out the 90 minutes Trip  which takes you from the Marina around the Palm Island where you can see the various Hotels on the Crescent and you also get a stunning view on JBR and the Marina, ideal for taking pictures if you are into that. The Boat stops close to the Atlantis Hotel giving you another chance for cool selfies and different view on the City. After this the boat follows the Palm Island down to the Atlantis Hotel, giving you the best view of this iconic Dubai Landmark.

20161105_152635From there we had been taken past the island of Princess Haya called The Logo Island where also the Yacht “Dubai” is parked. Going back to the Marina you could see well that the Dubai Eye is still under construction before turning back into the Marina.

We were 8 people in the small blue speed boat including the driver which is a really nice low number compared to these full RTA rides where you are lucky to have a chance to get a clear picture at all.

For us this 90 Minutes boar trip was a really cool experience. We appreciated the nice different angle you get to see on Dubai by looking at it from the Water. The ever-changing skyline gives you always things you might have not seen from the roads or Metro. This is a fun ride but can be a bit bumpy if the see is rough. I had partially the feeling of being dizzy from all that shaking, but in the end the trip and what you get to see is certainly worth it.

Xclusive Tours Dubai is offering this 90 Minute trip four times a day starting at 10:30, 12:30, 14:30 and 16:30. You can book the tickets online on their website which I would recommend given the few seats available per trip.  On the money side this trip will set you back 200AED per person for adults, kids from 5-12 years pay only 150AED which is a fair deal for the stunning views of Dubai.

Tried out: Boutique Le Chocolat

The other day we had visited the Grand opening of Boutique Le Chocolat at the City Walk in Dubai. It was the first Worldwide branch and all chocolates are fresh, handmade and all are imported from

Artisan chocolatiers from around the world. Boutique Le Chocolat so brings together internationally renowned chocolatiers and a world of indulgence for all chocolate lovers under one roof here in Dubai.

The chocolates are free from preservatives and additives which gives them a lifespan of roughly two weeks. There is an extremely huge variety of flavors and it is handmade like an high end product. Needless to say they were delicious too.  shoeWhat got us really amazed was one member of staff making live a hand-made model of a high-heeled shoe (like 6 or 7 inches in size), really stunning and I would have not thought that this is possible without using a machine. There also different other items available in chocolate  like handbags, necklaces and many more. You can find chocolatiers from Japan, Belgium, the US, Switzerland and France in this store from 28 brands so far which is a really huge variety.

Customers can even try different chocolates and create their very own personal chocolate bar with an individual message on it. Cool, right?

Boutique Le Chocolat is not merely a shopping experience; it is a one-of-a-kind destination, where chocolate aficionados can indulge in a sweet haven that offers them a premium selection of the finest bonbons and bars with around 700 different flavours,” said Kareem Faisal, Meraas chief retail officer.

The store offers a full sensory experience, immersing clients in the enchanting world of artisan chocolate-making from bean to final product. A foray into the realm of mellow, creamy, rich and deep taste sensations awaits.

Dubai gets aboard the Hyperloop train it seems…

Hyperloop could be heading to the Middle East, thanks to a new deal signed on Monday between Hyperloop One and port operator DP World. The partnership calls for a feasibility study of how the nascent, ultra-fast transport technology could improve Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port, but both parties hope that’s just the beginning.

The study will look at the possibility of building a Hyperloop to take freight off container ships arriving at Jebel Ali and transport it via the technology’s system of pods moving through pressurized tubes to an inland depot that DP World plans to build further inland.

“By having a system where a box can be taken off a ship and dropped into the tube or pod, we are moving activity that would otherwise be on the island terminal as well as reducing the size of the terminal you need to build,” said Hyperloop One founding board member Peter Diamandis.

The Los Angeles-based startup says a Hyperloop can fit within Dubai’s existing transportation corridors and could reduce freeway traffic by taking cargo transport trucks off roads. DP World says it can even foresee using a “submerged floating Hyperloop” located next to its huge new terminal built on a man-made island.

Hyperloop One isn’t the only startup looking to commercialize a version of the technology originally open sourced by Elon Musk three years ago. Hyperloop Transportation Technologies has its own plans for a pilot passenger track in California. But Hyperloop One has been stealing all the headlines lately, with public tests at the site of its new Nevada construction facility and other initiatives in Russia and Finland.

Even with the latest in a string of globe-trotting agreements, we’ve still yet to see a complete Hyperloop proof of concept. Regardless, it seems the worldwide Hyperloop race is on and Dubai is now in the mix.

“We firmly believe that this study is the first step towards the construction of the Hyperloop in Dubai,” said Shervin Pishevar, cofounder and Executive Chairman of Hyperloop One.
