Movie Review: Rogue One : A Star Wars Story

So finally I come to write my Review of Rogue One : A Star Wars Story. I watched it the other night and was really impressed. To take it away directly: This one for me is the film in the franchise so far.  Despite basically knowing the beginning and the ending because of the other parts playing before and after this one in the time line of the Star Wars Movies, this Movie is just amazing. But let´s get to this one by one.

Well, there is no typical Star Wars introduction with the text rolling up in Rogue One, but who cars. It still starts long time ago in a Galaxy far far away though.  There are no Jedis, no Lightsaber fights good against evil and no Yoda.

“The Force is with me, and I am with the Force” The blind warrior Chirrut Îmwe (Donnie Yen) repeats this Jedi Knight Mantra over and over again, then stretches one Stormtrooper after the other with the elegant blows of his long fighting stick . Îmwe, accompanied by his buddy, the bullish, and to the teeth armed Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen), is a tragicomic Samurai.

He does not look noble and sublime, rather a bit ridiculous and trashy. As if the makers of the “Star Wars” film “Rogue One” were to make a joke with the actually a bit of a boringly acting spiritual superstructure of the Blockbuster saga: The heroic Jedis play only a minor role in this gripping and surprising film by director Gareth Edwards (“Monsters”, “Godzilla”) while they also ensure a bit of comic relief.

Baze Malbus:   Are you *kidding* me? I’m blind! [when he gets a bag put over his head]

The world of “Rogue One” is not yet the one of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia, let alone the new heroine Rey from “The Force Awakens”, the spectacular reboot of the franchise from a year ago. The “Force”, at least its dark side, lies in this link between the original “Star Wars” trilogy and the Prequels completely in the hands of the Fascist empire of the distant fictional “Star Wars” galaxy, controlled by evil Sith- Lords like Darth Vader and their uniformed minions. The film tells the story of a small band of rebels, who have resolved fate and who want to get the plans of the most terrible weapon for the totalitarian regime: the Death Star.

John Knoll, the visual director of the prequel trilogy, had the idea of “Rogue One” more than ten years ago, inspired by the so-called “Crawl”, the all-driving script, with which 1977, at the beginning of the original Star Wars Film, the scenery was established. The complete, in fact quite clear, plot of “Rogue One” can be found in the few lines that every hardcore fan of the saga can memorize by heart: “It is a period of Civil War”.
It was only after the sale of the franchise rights by Star Wars creator George Lucas to Disney that the opportunity arose to realize the project. Disney and producer Kathleen Kennedy are now opening up the Lucas universe into the widespread fagades of the fan fiction and installations that have formed around “Star Wars” over the decades.

That the storyline is not really surprising does not break the pleasure of this film. This is due once again to the magnificently drawn figures – above all the blind Chirrut Îmwe (Donnie Yen) and the Droide K-2SO, which are the only ones to keep the humor flag somewhat up. Felicity Jones as Jyn is a heroine, as you can hardly wish for – even if she does not really have time for character development.

In addition to that the classic ingredients like a thrilling soundtrack, great landscapes, sensational effects and surprises, just like “Star Wars” (care for Peter Cushing!) – and finished is one of the best films of the year.

The greatest thing about “Rogue One” however is that Darth Vader returns his dignity. As one of the most popular characters in the film history he is already pop cultural common property.

Even people who have nothing to do with the saga know him and usually only see the guy with a black mask and funny breathing sounds. But it is also hard to be frightening with a helmet, which is exactly the same in the carnival children department of each department store. But everything is done right here. Darth Vader´s performance is short – but very intense.

At the end of “Rogue One”, the difficulty of making a film that meets the demands and expectations of different generations becomes evident. There is a closing scene where the end comes for Jyn and Cassian which is pretty much over the top in my opinion. But at the end of the day there is still a candy that can only be found in the “Star Wars” universe, which immediately reminds you of why you have been loving this all for almost 40 years.

In my opinion this is an amazing Movie and a must watch, not only for die hard Star Wars fans. If you watch the movie and you are looking aside the main frame of the movie, you will see old friends like R2-D2 and C3PO appearing as well as Princess Leia.
