We attended last night the Movie Premiere of Insidious: Chapter 3 at the Novo Cinemas at the Ibn Batutta Mall courtesy of Empire International Gulf LLC. Insidious: Chapter 3 is as the name suggests the third part already of the franchise, but is actually a prequel to the first two parts written as well by Leigh Whannell who this time as well directed the installment. Insidious: Chapter 3 is starring Stefanie Scott, Dermot Mulroney, Lin Shaye, Angus Sampson and Leigh Whannell himself in the returning role as Specs.
The Plot in short: After trying to connect with her dead mother, teenager Quinn Brenner, ask physic Elise Rainier to help her, she refuses due to negotiate events in her childhood. Quinn starts noticing paranormal events happen in her house. After a vicious attack from a demon her father goes back and begs Elise Rainier to use her abilities to contact the other side in hope to stop these attacks by this furious demon content for a body.
Leigh Whannell was until now responsible for the screenplays for ‘Insidious’ (2011) and ‘Insidious: Chapter 2’ (2013), and takes now the reins of the hit horror franchise as director of the third part, the “darker” Saga. He himself returns in the role of Specs while Angus Sampson returns in the role of Tucker as well. Lin Shaye who played the medium Elise Rainier already in the first two installments is back on board as well. But this time not as the tough lady she is in the other movies. In this prequel we meet a frightened and scared Elise that just lost her husband and is scared to get killed herself if she gets in contact again with the other side. But during the movie her role shifts from stiff and introspective to fearlessly compassionate and becoming the person she portraits in the later playing two movies.
As well a great addition to the cast was Stefanie Scott who played Quinn Brenner, the main protagonist. Her very fresh and natural way of acting was really a benefit to the credibility of the film. The rest of the case was good as well, but only these two really stood out.
As far as scares go, this was definitely a very scary movie. There were several moments in the film that gave me real goosebumps, and that does not happen often. As well there were also the classic jump out of your seat moments of course. Some scenes were quite creepy and the mixing of music and sounds were done superbly to add to the Horror feeling.
The atmosphere throughout the movie was creepy and tense. I really liked it. Another good thing is that even without having seen the first two parts you can watch this one without sitting there and not understanding some of the scenes as this is the prequel. So there is not excuse to not watch this one folks!
The Verdict: Insidious Chapter 3 does a good job explaining the happenings before the first two parts. It delivers tense moments paired with sheer creepy ones. Leigh Whannell succeeds in finding new, inventive scares and creating a variety of disturbing ghosts in The Further. This is the same world of Insidious as you experienced in the other two installments, but under his directive the hysteria and frenzy that fueled the previous films has been replaced by a much darker and way more sinister sensibility.
