Last night we attended the Dubai Premiere of “SPY” at the newly opened VOX Cinemas at the Burjuman Center courtesy of Empire International Gulf. “SPY” is written and directed by Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) and stars Jude Law, Melissa McCarthy and Jason Statham.
The Plot in short: Susan Cooper is an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agency’s most dangerous missions. But when her partner falls off the grid and another top agent is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent a global crisis.
Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy), has passed the CIA Spy training with distinction. A lack of self-confidence however, leaves her stale in an office job only, where she lets her partner, the James Bond style Bradley Fine (Jude Law), look good in his job due to her analytic skills. But when her partner falls off the grid and another top agent(Jason Statham) is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent a global doomsday.
Melissa McCarthy is one of the most talented comedians in Hollywood. But even this talent could not save her from such flops as Tammy or Identity Thief. Luckily, there is Paul Feig, author of Bridesmaids and Heat, who has written “SPY” for McCarthy herself. His women-friendly comedy, coupled with McCarthy’s talent, let this film not only degenerate into a parody, but makes it a sophisticated spy comedy.
There are refreshingly no Jokes about Susan’s weight. You find only Jokes about those people who underestimate Susan because she does not look like one would imagine a spy. From her CIA superiors (Alison Jenny) she is given the most stupid undercover identities as lonely cat lady or single cosmetic representative. But when Susan develops confidence in her own abilities , oters realize how good this competent spy can look.
The slippery advances of the Italian agent, played by Peter Serafinowicz are great, but as well disgusting, but nevertheless credible like as well the exciting fight scene between McCarthy and Nargis Fakhri as a hostile agent in the kitchen of a high-end restaurant. The film is quite long and some jokes, like the rat infestation in the CIA headquarters are ridden to death. But a spy movie, in which all the leading roles, even the evil Nemesis (Rose Byrne), are played by woman is refreshing and was long overdue.
This is a classic American Entertainment Movie, spiced with a lot of good gags, good action and a phenomenal acting Jason Statham. We loved this movie and despite still not being a Melissa McCarthy Fan for me this is her best Movie yet. Certainly a Movie you have to watch on the big screen!
