The Plot in short:Nicky Spurgeon (will Smith) is a seasoned con-man who becomes romantically involved with an attractive young woman; while introducing her to the tricks of his con man trade, she gets too close for comfort and he abruptly breaks it off. Three years later, the former flame — now an accomplished femme fatale — shows up in Buenos Aires as the opposing side of the same scam: a billionaire international race car owner. In the midst of Nicky’s latest, most dangerous scheme, she throws his plans for a loop…and the consummate con man off his game.
To be fair the last Will Smith movie After Earth was rather a complete debacle so my expectations on Focus had not been that high either. Will Smith in a romantic movie? Not really, out of Hitch back in the days there was not really a movie in that genre that was good with him.
Nicky: It’s about distraction. It’s about focus. The brain is slow and it can’t multitask. Tap him here, take from there.
Focus however is pretty good. Will Smith and Margot Robbie, which most people probably from The Wold of Wall Street , are working very well together in this movie.
I really liked that Writers and Directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa throw up a twisty story here in which the audience to 99% cannot figure out what is really going on before it is revealed in the end. I am not going to explain this further to not spoil it, but I found myself trying the whole time to guess the story, and whenever I thought i got it, it turned. Brilliant. Aside from the two main characters I found Adrian Martinez who plays Farhad a member of the gang, pretty entertaining.
Overall I found the movie very entertaining, with a good story and a very good execution where thanks to diverting one’s focus you will be distracted til the end. Highly recommended to watch.
