Movie Review: Divergent

Divergent_film_posterWe had been out yesterday to see Divergent at the newly opened Reel Cinemas at the Beach in JBR.

The Reel Cinema is not huge compared to the one in the Dubai Mall but has its charme. You got one counter for drinks and popcorn in the groundfloor as well as the ticket kiosks and the electronic ticket terminals which did not work on our visit today.  Once you are done down you take the escalator to the first floor where the cinemas are one after another. The Cinemas do not seat really many people but it is OK. Not Ok was for me that the both emergency exit signs where way too light. They lightend the half cinema. Worst is that one is just underneath the screen. Whoever has planned that was a genius.

But now to the movie, starting with the plot in short:

Set in a futuristic dystopia where society is divided into five factions that each represent a different virtue, teenagers have to decide if they want to stay in their faction or switch to another – for the rest of their lives. Tris Prior makes a choice that surprises everyone. Then Tris and her fellow faction-members have to live through a highly competitive initiation process to live out the choice they have made. They must undergo extreme physical and intense psychological tests, that transform them all. But Tris has a secret that she is Divergent, which means she doesn’t fit into any one group. If anyone knew, it would mean a certain death. As she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, this secret might help her save the people she loves… or it might destroy her.

Tori: You’re different. You don’t fit into a category. They can’t control you. They call it Divergent.

From the beginning till the end I was hooked. I found the pacing just fine. The people who complain about it being too slow are just folks who want every movie to be action all the time. The movie has plenty of action, but it also has humor, romance, drama, philosophy, and just general dystopian ingredients.

I really liked the movie. Recommend to watch it as long as it runs….
